Ozark Opportunities closed its Summer Crisis Assistance Cooling Program as of Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013. The agency no longer has funds available to assist in paying utilities.


The Clinton High School Homecoming Parade will start at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, and will circle the Courthouse square.

The Dennard Cemetery Association is asking that flowers that interfere with mowing be removed from graves by Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, when there will be a cemetery clean-up beginning at 8 a.m. Arrangements on tombstones and hanging baskets can remain.

The Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce holds its annual Chili King Cookoff beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in downtown Clinton. There will be more than 30 craft booths and 16 chili teams. Buy a $5 armband and try all the chili you want; serving begins at 5:30 p.m. Slingin Gravel will perform at 6 p.m.

There will be a five-year "family reunion" for former employees of Pilgrim’s Pride from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at the Van Buren County Fairgrounds. The Maria Van Buren Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold its October meeting at 1 p.m Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at Simmons First National Bank in Clinton. Guest speaker will be Robert R. Gaut of Alread. He will talk about the Indian Trail Thong Trees in Van Buren County. Everyone is welcome to come and hear how these trees marked trails, rivers, shelters, and more.

The North Central Arts Foundation for Arts & Education presents renowned keyboardist Aaron Alfred Lee in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Presbyterian Kirk of the Hills, 250 Dave Creek Parkway, Fairfield Bay. The North Central Arkansas Art Gallery is showcasing original artwork by 32 artists at the grand opening of Our Towne Conference and Visitors Center and StoryFest at the Bay on Saturday, Oct. 12. The viewing is free and open to the public. The artwork will be on display until March 3, 2014.

Members of the Damascus Chapter 515, Order of the Eastern Star, will serve breakfast from 7-9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Doric Lodge 471 F&AM on Highway 65 and 285 West in Damascus. The menu includes sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, biscuits and sausage gravy. All donations help support charities. Everyone is welcome.

Applications to become a Master Gardener are due by Oct. 22, 2013. To become a Master Gardener, you must complete 40 hours of training and return 40 volunteer hours to the organization by working on gardening projects, planning events, or creating presentations. Classes are held on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and 9 classes will be conducted at Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View. Nov. 12, 26, and Dec. 3 classes will be held at the Our Town Convention and Visitor Center in Fairfield Bay.
