The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service began its volunteer Master Gardener program 25 years ago with a class of 30 people from four counties. Today the program engages more than 3,200 volunteers in 65 of the state’s 75 counties.

To commemorate their 25th year, 1,000 Master Gardeners from more than 50 counties, including 27 from Van Buren County, toured Moss Mountain Farm, the home and working farm of P. Allen Smith. They enjoyed the fruit orchard, poultry facility, and perennial, rose and vegetable gardens.
