Water department issues and post-homecoming review were the two big issues at Shirley City Council’s meeting Monday, June 12.

Shirley City Council agreed to sign a confidentiality agreement with Community Water System. The agreement permits the service to look over city water department records and determine if they would be interested in taking over water service for the city.

Also in water-service related issues, a representative from Crist Engineering was on hand to give estimates on fixing the water main where it crosses the bridge into town. The condition of the main and the need, and cost of, repair has been a consistent topic in recent council meetings. A water department contractor also presented to the council about taking over once current department head Larry Dollar retired.

In review of the homecoming and its costs, the council was told the city was “in the green” on expenses.

A resolution was passed by the body, approving street resurfacing using state funds, affecting seven streets.

Mayor Lisa Hackett said she is still working on finding grants and donations to stabilize the old bank building. Her and city recorder-treasurer Lisa Worthing will be attending the forthcoming Municipal League conference in Little Rock.
