Driving home after dark last week I was blocked by a little owl sitting in the middle of the dirt road. He was about 6 inches tall and gazed at me intently. As I grabbed for a camera he flew off. Odds are it was an Eastern screech owl but he looked a lot like the Northern saw-whet owl U. of A. researchers are so excited about capturing recently. Between 1959 and 2010 there had only been a dozen sightings in the state.
Ate some of the juiciest and sweetest wild blackberries ever recently. The rains came at the perfect time to keep the fruits swelling. It looks like a good crop this year.
Also the Mayapples are ripening as the foliage dies back. They are very tasty.
And in the garden my cucumbers have started providing all the crunchy deliciousness I can handle. It looks to be a bountiful growing season this year.
“Blooms of Note” going on now: Rose of Sharon, cannas and crepe myrtle.
