Van Buren County Treasurer Kim Hunley recently, with cooperation of the county, the National Association of Counties, the National Flag Foundation and the National Sheriffs Association, has installed a flag retirement box at the Van Buren County Annex.
The retirement box is for flags too worn to continue in use, to allow for proper disposal. Veterans Services Officer Paul Pronia will attend to the proper disposal of flags retrieved from the box.
Users are reminded flags, no matter how worn, should be properly folded prior to being placed in the box.
The United States Flag Code prescribes flag etiquette — everything from flying it near other flags to instructions on how to raise and lower it. “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” says the code.
