Fountain Lake made 14 of 16 free throws in the fourth period to secure a 59-49 victory over the Mena Bearcats Nov. 21 at Irvin J. Bass Gymnasium.
Cobra Head Basketball Coach Jake Dettmering’s starters included; junior guard No. 3 Ahman Johnson, senior guard No. 55 Parion Johnson, senior forward No. 35 Cade Dodge, junior guard No. 5 Jordan Mungle and junior guard No. 21 Joe Murphy.
The Bearcat, coached by Thomas Powell, starters included; senior forward No. 14 Blake Seals, junior guard No. 23 Nike Myers, junior forward No. 21 Brock Strother, junior guard No. 2 Connor Harvey and junior guard No. 5 Zeb Wilson.
Mungle led the Cobras with five points in the first period, P. Johnson and Murphy added three points apiece, while A. Johnson chipped in with two points. Six Bearcats scored in the opening period, led by sophomore Zane Stephens’s three points, to tie the game at 13-13.
Fountain Lake outscored Mena 17-8 in the second period to take a 30-21 lead at the half, led by Mungle with five points including a three-pointer. Strother led the Bearcats in the period with four points.
Mena edged the Cobras 14-13 in the third period to cut the Fountain Lake lead to 43-35. Harvey led Mena in the period with six points. Murphy led the Cobras with five, including a three pointer.
The Bearcats went to a full court press in the attempt to cut into the Cobra’s lead early in the fourth period. However, the strategy did not benefit Mena, as Fountain Lake put the game away from the free throw line shooting 88 percent, in the period, from the charity stripe to take the 10 point victory.
Mungle and Murphy led Fountain Lake with 14 points apiece. A. Johnson scored 12 points, while P. Johnson added 10. Junior guard Riley Hood chipped in with one point.
Harvey led the Bearcats with 15 points, while Strother scored 10.
Wilson and Myers added seven points apiece. Seals scored five points, while Stephens chipped in with three.
