Mid-America Indoor Pickleball Championships, slated for March 22-25 at the Bank of the Ozarks Arena and Convention Center in Hot Springs, has attracted national attention as one of the premiere tournaments of middle USA, with over 350 registered players.
“Since the tournament is only two months away, the goal of 400 plus players is very probable,” stated Winnie L Montgomery, tournament director of the massive event. She further said, “We are inviting all interested people, pickleball players or not, to participate by volunteering their talents and time.”  Volunteers are needed for various areas such as: main entrance greeters, setup and takedown in the arena, taping lines and installing barriers for 24 courts, hanging banners, distribution of goody bags, shirts and pins, hospitality room workers to distribute and replenish complimentary fruit, snacks, water, and Gatorade.
Other volunteers will be needed to help with prizes for players and referees, and to award medals. Arena monitors will gravitate between referees and the tournament operations desk to assist in keeping matches on schedule.
The biggest challenge is to secure referees for nearly 1,000 matches to be played over the course of three days.  Free referee training clinics are being offered to those willing to learn how to referee pickleball matches. These clinics and practice sessions are being held in HSV, Hot Springs, and some surrounding communities.
Training will be conducted by experienced tournament players and referees. Many opportunities are available and will continue to be requested until the week prior to the tournament start date of March 23. All referees will be paid for each match they referee.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or referee trainee for the largest pickleball tournament in our five-state region is urged to contact Jim or Sandy McPherson at 501- 915-3512 or 501-915-2606, or email them at jimsanmc1@gmail.com with a description of the duties you would be willing to perform and the days and times you are available for March 22-25.
