The annual Archey Fork Summer Festival draw a big crowd last weekend despite the scorching heat and the lack of a fireworks display.

At least a couple of hundred people showed up Friday evening for the first day of the festival, and Saturday’s crowd was larger than last year’s, according to City Hall officials.

Among the attractions were carnival rides, live music, food and a fishing derby. The annual Archey Fork Classic Car Show took place during the day on the Courthouse Square in downtown Clinton.

This year, the fishing derby was moved from its early morning slot to 6 p.m. Saturday. Eighty-one young people registered for the event. The list of winners will be in next week’s Democrat.

One of the major events of the festival, the fireworks display, was canceled because of the countywide burn ban and drought conditions. It will be rescheduled when the burn ban is lifted, city officials said.
