The Shirley City Council has approved a budget for 2014.

At its meeting Jan. 13, the council was unanimous in approving the second draft of the 2014 budget. Details of the budget are available at Shirley City Hall.

The council also voted unanimously to lease available city property to RD Williams & Co. for $1,500 per net mineral acre and one-fifth royalties.

The council also unanimously approved spending $5,459 for municipal software. They decided to purchase the Center Point software, which included complete database set up including charts of accounts, fund balances, payroll employee information, year-to-date balances for both accounting and payroll, and all other database setup necessary to begin processing current business on the day of installation, according to Treasurer/Recorder Melissa Worthing.

It also was decided that buying a generator to turn the Community Center into a warming center was not feasible this year. Mayor Johnny Sowell said he would talk with the Van Buren County Office of Emergency Management to see if a generator is available to borrow in case of an emergency if the city has the proper hookup.

The Shirley City Council’s next regular meeting is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 10, 2014.
