Four people were injured as a tornado ravaged parts of Van Buren County on Wednesday.

The tornado occurred around 5:30 p.m., cutting a 30-mile swath through the county and causing damage in the communities of Botkinburg and Scotland. An estimated 50 homes were damaged or destroyed.

Everyone has been accounted for, said Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Jeana Williams.

Also hit by the tornado was the Botkinburg Foursquare Church, built about 10 years ago by the church members. Church pastor Ester Bass said he was heart-broken. He said they will rebuild the church.

It was three years ago this month that a tornado ripped through Scotland, destroying scores of homes and killing one person.

In February 2008, Clinton was in the path of a major tornado that killed a worker at a boat factory. Two other people also died in Clinton in that tornado.

The National Weather Service has not yet determined the category of Wednesday’s tornado.
