Scholarship deadlines

Pay attention. We know with the recent rush of graduation into the relative freedom of summer leads to distraction, but if you want to apply for a Lottery Scholarship you have to have your application in by June 15.

The scholarship is administered by the state department of education, and you can log on to for information.

PIckin on the square

This Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon is the second time around for Pickin’ on the Square in Clinton. Come and play along, or come and listen, it’s all good. Acoustic instruments, no mics, no amps, we just sit in a circle and play music, each taking turns. Bring a chair and we’ll meet under the big tree by the courthouse.

If the weather’s foul (it’s not supposed to be, but still: Arkansas) we’ll meet in the newspaper office’s big back room.

Benefit this weekend

And of course, as you can read on our front page, the benefit for Alicia Pate-Housley at Archey Fork Park this Saturday. It looks like fun, of course (live music and barbeque is easy math) but more to the point it’s a chance for the community to do what communities do, and that’s reach out and help one of its own.

Well yeah, and eat barbeque.

We realize these are cynical times. That (somebody’s) always (something) about (something) and we have plenty of people shouting at television cameras to prove it. That’s fine, that’s for the people who fly at those levels to do, but we’re here, Ozark foothills, one of those areas that’s just a gem as far as the quality of life and the people in it. But if we’re going to be the people in it, and a gem, then we have to support those other people in it.

Go throw a couple bucks in the box, hear somebody you kinda’ know do a good job singing a song, watch someone on a motorcycle eat a hot dog (no, seriously, that’s the rodeo thing, it’ll be great) and know you did your part for a single Mom up against a battle.
