Our passage of scripture for today is Proverbs 4:23 which says “Above all else, guard your heart for everything you do flows from it.” With that verse in mind, if you had to pick a theme song for your life story, what would it be? I believe mine would be Eye of the Tiger, not just because my name is Rocky but because it’s an inspirational song about overcoming the odds and the Bible tells us we are more than conquerors!

Every now and then some of us might need to change our tune, especially when it comes to the things of God.

First of all, I believe we need to TUNE IN! The definition of tuning in is to adjust a radio or television set to receive a broadcast of someone or something. God’s word doesn’t adjust to our lives, but our lives should adjust to line up with God’s Word. John 10:27 says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” If you haven’t heard the voice of the Shepherd lately, you might want to spend some time with him to be tuned in on the right frequency to hear what He is speaking to you.

Next, we have to STAY TUNED! It’s not good enough to just get tuned in every now and then, but we have to stay tuned to the Spirit of God through prayer, reading his Word, fellowship with other believers, etc. I saw a quote that said you wouldn’t tune an instrument after you played a concert, so why do we start our day without first getting in tune and staying in tune with the Lord. He tells us in His Word to be still and know that he is God. What a reminder that whatever we are going through, we have to be still and trust that He is in control. How can we do this if we are not staying tuned to his Spirit?

Next, we have to learn to TUNE OUT the enemy’s lies, negative thoughts, and the naysayers that try to clutter our minds so much that we cannot hear from God. We have to remember that when things are over our head they are still under His feet! If we are not careful, we can tune in to the wrong things such as gossip or fear and it can lead us astray. In 1 Peter 2:11 we read, “Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.” It’s a war every day between the Spirit and our flesh, and we have to tune out those things that would hinder us from hearing God’s voice.

Finally, we need a TUNE UP to be all that God has called us to be. In Psalms 51:10 we read, “Create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me.” The definition of a tune up is making small changes to an engine so that it works as well as possible. Some of us could use a tune up, while others could use a spiritual alignment. In addition to this, some of us need an oil change to exchange the spirit of heaviness for the oil of gladness! I also believe that some of us might even need a complete overhaul. I pray that every reader of this article examines their heart to see what their tune might be and then determine by God’s grace to recommit to a life that’s pleasing unto God.

I leave you with some song lyrics I wrote a few years ago: “It’s not about what we did, it’s all about what He did, nothing we could do, we seldom do what we should do, For God so loved the world just because and He does still, to me, to you, to who, to whosoever will”
