It’s the one on which everything else depends.
Life’s greatest foundational Truth.
In some ways I’ve always been interested in knowing what makes things (and people) tick. Not in a mechanical way—for I still remember tearing apart a small motor in my dad’s shop, not being able to put it back together and getting in trouble!
No, my search for real, irrefutable, verifiable Truth began at an early age. And, thankfully, even though quite young, I found that upon which everything hinges and what a difference it’s made in my life.
“What might that be?” asks one in curiosity.
The answer: Genesis 1:1.
“What?!?” replies the seeker. “Genesis 1:1?? Are you crazy?!?”
Nope, not in the least—for it takes childlike Faith to believe “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Now, there are probably some of you who are reading these words who find that difficult to believe. There may be others of you who are already crying “What a crazy lunatic!” and vowing to never read my column again.
But, that’s okay. I can only tell you what I know to be true. And, again, this 10-word sentence in the first verse of the Bible is definitely the foundational Truth in life.
So, the question, then (if you’re still reading), is this: “Why is that so?”
Simply because it requires Faith in the God of the Bible…believing He’s the One Who created everything that is…and basing your life, views-and-values upon what He says…not what someone else says.
Why is that important?
Because we no longer need to spend countless hours/years in search for Truth, always comparing one belief to another or battling doubts, disillusionment and despair.
As a young boy, no one had to tell me there had to be more to life than what meets the eye. I still remember standing outside at night, looking up at the stars and moon and somehow, instinctively, knowing they didn’t happen by accident.
Then, at the age of seven in a revival service in a little country church in central Arkansas I felt a tugging in my heart. I felt lonely and unloved; but, that night the preacher talked about a God in Heaven Who loved me enough to send His Son to the Cross for me. And, by Faith, I believed that and I’ve never been the same again.
But, what does Genesis 1:1 have to do with that?
You see, if I disbelieve that there is a Creator of all that is, then I’ll be looking for other reasons why things are the way they are. I’ll know there has to be something behind all of this because two molecules of hydrogen bonding with one molecule of oxygen to produce water doesn’t just happen by accident or coincidence.
Oh, like some, I could have embraced some theories like evolution or the Big Bang. But, those are so far-fetched that reason alone—because of the infinitesimal odds against them—demands it. And, neither can believing in some nameless, faceless “Power” or supernatural energy force quench that innermost thirst for Truth and meaning.
Only Faith in an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, personally-knowable God can do that. And, then that same, simple, childlike Faith will believe what the Bible says and be changed by the glorious Truth of Jesus, Who He is and what He did for us on the Cross 2,000 years ago.
So, here’s hoping you’ll also use Gen. 1:1 as your Foundational Truth for life, dear Reader. If so, you, too, will find everything else falling into place in this jigsaw puzzle called Life. And, oh how sweet it is! God bless you.
