Many people might wonder what the Foursquare Gospel really is, and how the church of the Foursquare Gospel got it’s name. First of all, the Foursquare Church was founded by Evangelist Aimee Semple Mcpherson in Los Angeles in 1923. The Foursquare Gospel focuses on four things: Jesus is our Savior, Healer, Baptizer of the Holy Spirit and Soon-Coming King! These four tenants are the foundation for everything the Pentecostal church that is known as Foursquare believes.
First of all, let’s look at Jesus as our Savior. In order to need a Savior, we have to need saving from something. According to the Bible, sin entered into the world when Adam fell in the Garden of Eden, and we are all born into sin and we need saving from our sin. Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins, and this core belief is what we trust in as far as Christianity is concerned. In Philippians 3:20 we read the following: For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. How great to remember that he is our Savior and if you don’t know him as your Savior, I would strongly suggest you make him Savior and Lord of your life. Admitting Jesus is your Savior requires humility and a willingness to admit you are a sinner in need of a Savior.
Next, we believe Jesus is our Healer. We believe the Bible is true, and what Jesus did back in Bible times he still does today. I realize that some do not believe that Jesus is our Healer, but I’m reminded of when Jesus said he could do no miracles in a certain region because of their unbelief! We have a part to play in all this, and we need to realize that he is our Great Physician. In terms of healing, I believe this goes beyond physical healing and reaches our spiritual, financial, and emotional needs as well. Acts 10:38 says, “ And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. No matter what you are going through, remember he is the burden bearer, pain taker and chain breaker and He is our Healer!
Next, we believe Jesus is the Baptizer of the Holy Spirit as we believe the Holy Spirit empowers the believer to spread the Gospel to the world. We are given boldness by the Spirit of God to preach the truth no matter the situation. My former Pastor when I was growing up now works with recovery groups and the other day he said with tears in his eyes that he wished he would have put more emphasis on the Holy Spirit when he Pastored in Conway. In order for us to receive all that God has for us, we have to be willing to receive the fullness of his Spirit. I don’t want to stand before God one day and hear Him say that I came up short in receiving all that he had for me. One of my favorite quotes from an unknown author is as follows: “When you get saved, you get the Holy Spirit, but when Jesus baptizes you in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit gets you!”
Finally, we believe that Jesus is our soon-coming King! I heard a story of a King that took his throne to the beach and told the waves to not come any further. Of course, the waves eventually went past his throne and he took his crown off and said there was only one worthy to be called King; the one whose voice the wind and waves obey! What a powerful illustration of Jesus seen as our King that is coming back for his Church! 1 Thessalonians 3:13 says, “May He strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones. Are you ready for the return of the King and are you letting him reign in your life today? One of our songs He’s Alive says, “ He’s the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, He’s looking for those who are looking for Him and nobody knows when but He’s coming again! Do you believe that? In summary, the Foursquare Gospel is founded on the four tenants we mentioned, and our theme verse sums it all up perfectly! Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” To view the four videos in this Sermon series go to Botkinburg Foursquare Facebook page and look for “The Foursquare Gospel Series” on Facebook.
