Friday, May 5 was the funeral for Cove Creek Person Fire Chief Scotty Douglas “Doug” Deckard, killed while making repairs after the April 29 storm. Representatives of emergency and civil service departments from the region participated in the funeral, and the procession, in honor of the fallen Fire Chief.
Deckard, by all who knew him, was thought of as a good man and, by those who worked in emergency services alongside him, as an enormously competent and hard-working chief always willing to lend a hand.
Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson order flag be flown at half-staff in Deckard’s honor.
Family friend Elizabeth Fry-Pike stated: “April 30, is day that will not be forgotten anytime soon. That is the day that the community of Quitman lost a firefighter, EMT, and a friend. A mother lost her only son; the Cove Creek Pearson lost their chief. This man was Doug Deckard. What Doug did for this community will always be remembered. And what this community meant to Doug was obvious in the way that he would tackle any task. We mourn the loss of such a giving person. A person who was doing what he always did….going the extra mile to help when needed. There is a void left that may never be filled, he had some big shoes to fill. Doug was laid to rest on Friday, May 5. Rest In Peace our dear friend. We will take it from here.”
