MOUNTAIN VIEW-- The Clinton Yellowjackets (10-0) entered Friday night’s game with a share of the conference title and the one seed in the state playoffs already sewn up. The only question was if the Yellowjackets could finish 10-0 for the second consecutive season, and win their second consecutive conference championship. That question was answered early and often as Clinton rolled up 297 yards of offense and 6 touchdowns against Mountain View on a sloppy, muddy field.
Clinton started fast, scoring on their first five possessions of the game despite the poor field conditions. Caleb Bowman’s first touchdown came on the opening drive, when he rumbled into the endzone from 14 yards out. Matthew Gonzalez, who was perfect on extra point tries, made the score 7-0 at the 6:18 mark in the first quarter. A poor punt by Mountain View set Clinton up near midfield for their second possession. This time, Ethen Drake scored from 33 yards out to make it 14-0 near the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Sky Davidson got in on the action with a 13 yard touchdown run that was set up by a Kadance Sowell interception. After stuffing Mountain View’s offense again, Clinton took over possession at their own 47 yard line. Bowman found a seam in the defense and outran the secondary for a 53 yard touchdown run to make the score 27-0.
Right before halftime, Senior Ryley McDonald fielded a punt at the 45 yard line, and broke five tackles in an electrifying touchdown return to push the score 35-0 at the half.
The second half lasted barely 30 minutes as the clock ran the entire half. Samuel Treat put Mountain View on the board with a 58 yard touchdown run to make the score 35-6. Freshman Nic Epley, just moved up from the Junior High squad, made his presence felt with a 20 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
Caleb Bowman led the rushing attack with 72 yards and 2 touchdowns on three carries. Sky Davidson added 52 yards and a touchdown on three carries, while Epley added 44 yards on 2 carries. Kadance Sowell led the defense with 8 tackles and an interception. Sky Davidson added 5 tackles and a sack in the contest.
Clinton starts its playoff run next Friday night at Jim Tumlison Field against traditional 3A power Charleston. The Tigers are coming in off a 31-6 victory over Lamar. Game time is set for 7 pm, and will be carried on KHPQ 92.1 with Jeff Hall and Mike Hawley making the call.
