Giving matters! We each have things in life that we are passionate about. We give when we can, we give because we care, we give out of love. The Dirty Farmers Community Market has a passion for seniors, so our mission is to give to seniors. We are able to continue our giving to seniors with the support of our community at our yearly benefit football game, but more importantly we continue to be able to give because our volunteers have a love and a passion for what we do.

Van Buren County as a whole is passionate about giving and give whenever and wherever there is a need. We see this sense of community weekly through our churches, community events and every day small gestures of kindness we show to one another. Giving is an investment in our community. When we give we improve our own quality of life. When you fly on a commercial airline the steward demonstrates how to use the safety equipment in the event of an emergency and they remind you that if you are traveling with a young child to place your oxygen mask on first before you help your child. Makes sense right? So when you give, you need to remember to give to yourself as well.

In light of yet another active shooting incident in Sante Fe, Texas I encourage you to please consider giving to yourself by supporting, in any way you can, the upcoming efforts of the non-profit organization, We Love Van Buren County (VBC), in raising the necessary funds to purchase equipment for our Sheriff’s department for a Special Response Team in our county. Special Response Teams are trained to respond to an active shooter situation not just in our schools but anywhere in our community.

How is this investing in yourself? By supporting their efforts you are investing in your safety and those of your loved ones. You know the proverb about an ounce of prevention? “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” We may not be able to cure this type of madness, this terrible display of anger and violence but we can do all that we can to help prevent and be prepared to respond should the situation arise. We can’t stick our heads in the sand and think it won’t happen to us, we need to be prepared. I choose to Stand with a Cop, “Not today. Not on this call, not on this shift, not on this watch…not me… I will not be caught unaware!” Unknown.

No matter what your passion, always remember, “Giving is not just about making a donation, It’s about making a difference,” Kathy Calvin.
